Use this before closing each container of fragile belongings. Follow the object's manufacturer instructions and the container's approved loading, closing and handling guidance. Ask a qualified conservator or specialist packer about valuable, damaged or unusual pieces.

Before you pack

Clear a stable work surface and set aside a place for finished packing.Check each object for existing damage, loose parts and delicate surfaces.Choose protection suited to the object; check that any original inserts are complete and usable.Photograph personally important pieces and note any special instructions privately.

Protection and spacing

Give each item its own appropriate protection.Check that pieces cannot touch, roll or put pressure on vulnerable parts.Fill gaps with suitable support without squeezing objects into place.Keep unrelated heavy belongings out of the fragile-item group.

The Canadian Conservation Institute's care guidance emphasizes protecting ceramic and glass objects from physical damage and supporting items that cannot stand securely. Delicate or decorated surfaces may need specialist materials.
